How Do I Choose the Right Scent for Me? A blog about choosing a scent for yourself and for gifts.

Updated: Sep 19, 2023

Candles are a popular product in today's business, whether for their long tradition, for the decorating possibilities or for the possibility of creating a very warm atmosphere.

At Lumi, we use soy wax (for creating both a smooth and visual-appealing burn), wooden wicks (to create that ambient sound of a candle with a wooden wick crackling like a fireplace) and a selection of fragrance that is the best way to improve your mood, reduce anxiety and even combat fatigue or loneliness.

Soy wax is all natural.

Soy Candle Making is a trending category that has been seeing a steady increase in recent years. Perhaps you wondered how this category has enjoyed a surge in sales and how so many brands managed to get new customers. The answer is clearly simple – soy candles are economically, environmentally friendly, and provide natural fragrance. Soy wax allows for a cleaner burn and is completely biodegradable when compared to paraffin waxes. Soy wax is made from soybeans, while paraffin wax is made from petroleum (yes, the same petroleum used to make oil and gas). Not only is soy wax all natural, it’s also sustainable since we can grow more soybeans.

Soy wax has a stronger fragrance.

Due to the lack of soot and toxins released into the air, soy wax candles have a stronger scent profile than paraffin wax candles. The chemicals released by paraffin wax can interfere with the scent during burning, which kind of defeats the point of lighting a candle. Since you can’t add extra fragrances to candles (too much fragrance oil will compromise the wax), having a clean burn that really shows off the aroma is important. After all, you’re probably not burning the candle for light, but rather for its scent.

The fragrance wheel.

The fragrance wheel is a round diagram that displays the different scent families and subfamilies. The scents are grouped based on their similarities and differences to show their relationship to one another. The scent groups that border each other share common olfactory characteristics, while those that are further away from one another are less related.

This fragrance classification system was developed by fragrance expert Michael Edwards in order to help retailers suggest scents to consumers more efficiently. Each family consists of a prominent scent, while the subfamilies are blended versions of these fragrances.

Scent families are broken up into four main categories: Floral, Oriental, Woody, and Fresh, each with their own subfamilies. A scent family has distinctive characteristics and often individuals will gravitate towards one scent family over another when choosing personal fragrances.

For this reason, it can be helpful to know which family you are attracted to before you go shopping for a new scented candle. Our candles aren't labeled with the scent family, but you should be able to find out which candle would suit you by looking at the notes (fragrance used) and the description written.

Floral Scent Families

The floral family is broken up into three subfamilies: Floral, Fruity and Green. Florals are characterized by their sweet, feminine scent and lightness. Floral fragrances often contain lilies, roses, jasmine, lilac, and carnations. These fragrances can be feminine or masculine depending on their composition. They tend to be the most popular scent family.

Oriental Scent Families

Oriental scents are warm and sensual and have been around for centuries. They tend to be richly spiced blends with exotic fruits like mango or pineapple combined with woody notes like sandalwood or patchouli. These scents are often liked by both men and women alike because they have universal appeal as well as being masculine or feminine depending on the blend.

Woody Scent Families

Woody scents are often described as “masculine” but this isn’t necessarily true; it depends on how much musk is present in. Woody fragrances are similar to Orientals but have less sweetness and more earthiness. Woody fragrances can be made from woods like sandalwood, cedarwood and patchouli oil.

Fresh Scent Families

Fresh fragrances typically do not contain any floral notes at all but rather are light floral blends that evoke images of spring meadows or seaside breezes. Fresh scents use green notes such as mints or citrus fruits like lemons or oranges. With the citrus note makes them perfect and more favourite for summer period. These scents are more often used in men's fragrances when you look at perfumes but with candles it has been a woman's favourite as well. The fresh scents are normally paired with spicy notes to create a more robust fragrance.

Here at LSC collection we provide a vast range of candles within the above categories. On the scents catalog page you can find our range each having the top notes, mid notes and base notes of fragrance that can help you decide what's best for you. The top notes are what brings the first impression of the scent but these molecules are small and tend to evaporate quickly. These scents are meant to intrigue and attract, then transition smoothly into the headier mid notes. The mid notes are often referred to as heart notes because they essentially form the foundation of the fragrance. These are more complex than the top notes and are meant to hold your attention and also act as a buffer for more robust base notes. The base notes are often described as calming. These scents are made up of large, heavy molecules providing complexity, depth and a lasting impression. Therefore, when selecting the perfect candle you may look at the base note as the powerful scent and walk the way up to the top notes.

NCA suggests using the chart below as a guide to selecting your scented candles to help you improve the mood you need. We suggest that you look for these scents in the base notes or mid notes to help more in easing your symptoms.
